Armenian Translations

Short Stories and Poems in Armenian Translation by William Michaelian
Over the last several years, a number of my stories and poems have been translated into Armenian and published in Armenias leading literary magazines. During that time, I have had the good fortune of working with Samvel Mkrtchian, a translator (Shakespeare, Faulkner, Saroyan) who not only understands what I am trying to say, but is able to convey the rhythm, and especially the humor, that is at the heart of even my most serious writing. I am grateful for this.

I am also grateful for the kind reception my work has been given in Armenia. For instance, not long ago, I heard that one of my stories, Arams Funeral, made two women in Yerevan laugh out loud while they were reading it in a literary journal and waiting for a bus. That the story was meant to be funny proves a couple of things: first, it proves literature and humor transcend borders; second, it proves the women were truly desperate for something to read.

Now, I am pleased to announce the publication of my first volume of collected translations. Hin Lezun (The Old Language) contains all of my work that has appeared in Armenia through 2005, plus several previously unpublished selections. The book contains stories, poems,
a short memoir that was read on Armenian National Radio, and three drawings. Copies can be ordered online by visiting Narek.com, an extensive marketplace that features Armenian books, music, and gifts.
