The Big Yellow Bus

This morning
when I
looked outside
I saw mothers
and fathers
with bright
lunch boxes
waiting bravely
for the big
yellow bus
to come.

Behind them
their children
waved good-bye
from windows
to a happier time.

When the bus
arrived
the parents
clambered on.

Like islands
in the mist
they soon
were gone.

Then the sky
kissed
the windows
and called
the children
home.

The sun
burned down
the houses
and the wind
swept clean
the street.

The miracle
was complete
when God
walked by
putting chimneys
in his pocket.
