Ham and Cheese on Rye

If I live on
to old age,
I wonder
if I’ll remember
these days
and how
I ate my
mother’s
leftover
sandwiches.

For the record,
they are ham and cheese on rye,
with sweet pickles, lettuce, and mayonnaise,
and sometimes yellow mustard.

I wonder
if I’ll remember
how she
never tired
of them,
and asked
countless
times if they
were my
invention.

Ham and cheese on rye,
the answer to every question.

Hello, morning sky,
good-bye, sad reflection.
