Grocer, Have You Any Books?Song for the Hungry Reader |
||
Grocer, have you any books? Your eggs are fine and your flour is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, I have some in for stew. The pages are smooth and the covers are good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, have you some ripe poetry? Your roast is fine and your yams are good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, Ive yet a poem or two. The words are sweet and the lines taste good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, have you a sad short story? Your cheese is fine and your grain is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, a fresh one just arrived. The lovers die and their names are good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, have the novels not come in? Your honey is fine and your fish is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, the novels are hung in back. The tomes are thick and the plots are good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, is there history in your bin? Your cream is fine and your butter is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, Im stocked from land to land. The hordes are wild and the kings are good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, have you any fables? Your salt is fine and your herbs are good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, the fables are aged and true. The heroes are wise and their deeds are good, But I see youre not so sure. Grocer, have you dramas by the pound? Your fruit is fine and your wine is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, Ill weigh one on the scale. The action is clear and the scenes are good, But, alas! I see youre not so sure. Grocer, fear not, for Ive finally come to terms. Your looks are fine and your manner is good, But Im wanting something more. Ah, yes, mlady, Id proudly seek your favor. The sun is bright and the weather is good, So wait while I close the store.
